My site is going ballistic and I'd like to draw on the UBB Collective's experience. Does anybody know of a good hosting provider that can cope with my site.
Technically, I need 500Mb of disk, PHP v4, MySQL and the usual email trimmings.
Data load, I need 250Gb a month and that can cope with 45,000 hits a day. My redesigned site has only been up 14 days but it's very popular and even caused another larger site to merge with us.
It's costing me an arm and a leg at the moment and I need to move quickly or even find a way of capping the usage to something manageable.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yea a porn site with 100,000 visitors daily, thats A LOT of bandwidth. If you REALLY need that, get a dedicated server...its time...

You're certainly not gonna get 250 GB bandwidth cheap...Digital Princeton is the way to go though, one way or another. They can do custom plans, which I *think* TheX is using a custom plan. I'm using the associate plan, and I dunno what plan GlassRattler is using. But anyways, all three of us are using Digital Princeton.net. They are one host that actually will be nice to UBB users.

Thanks guys. Sadly, the figures are correct, it's currently running at around 11Gb a day, mainly due to the large quantities of pictures that people are downloading.
All the dedicated server options I looked at still had bandwidth limits that couldn't cope. I just wish somebody would cap the bandwidth instead. Besides I also get no money from running this site. It's just a little hobby site that became a monster.

BTW The site isn't all UBB traffic. UBB is part of the site but its the central part of the site as the UBB cookies are used throughout the site.
When members register with UBB the cookie is read by the pages and uses the information in UBB for accessing their public names, email addresses and ensuring they have write privileges.
Members can rate pictures on the site, write reviews, rate links and sign up to a newswire service. All these elements are written in PHP but the MySQL databases store the UBBMemberID and I basically treat the UBB files as another set of database tables in terms of normalising the data structure used by the site.
It works very well but it means my members don't have to remember multiple logins, I don't have to hack UBB to cope with an external membership database and it makes the whole site appear like it's just one site and not made up from free scripts or separate software components.

I checked out the hosts you guys recommended but Infopop is way too expensive, $1000 for 70Gb a month. Ubbhosters quote $459 a month for 60Gb transfer and a dedicated server at Digital Princeton costs more than I'm paying at the moment.
I'm currently paying around $210 a month for my 250Gb bandwidth.

If you REALLY need all those graphics, just make them smaller (less width+height and gif with high compression rate). I don't think you'll be able to find less than $210 for 250GB bandwidth, as it's very cheap.

Do you think maybe the guy with the larger site was tired of paying the hosting ?
Your vistors must be just looking at your pictures, because you say your getting 45,000 hits per day, but your message board stats only show your board has been visted 73,000 times in the whole month of July.

Lol, he was on an "unlimited" account but in reality it was 20Gb and they complained every day about his bandwidth which reached 103Gb but he only had 600 pictures, compared to our 2,100.
My stats say that 75% of my bandwidth is from the pictures. The forums are just part of the site and only responsible for around 6,000 pages per day at the moment.
I am going to halve the picture quality and use that to trim the bandwidth. I've also been trying to use KaZaA to share the pictures as a few Zips but it doesn't seem to work when there's only one copy of a file. Nobody can see them.

I really hate saying this, as their tech support is reportedly utter, complete crap, but have you looked at rackshack.net?

I have now, thank you. It's cheap and would certainly give me everything I need. As you say though, it may give me some real problems as well. It's nice to have an option to hit my current host over the head with and see if they want to haggle.

That's the most bandwidth I've seen for a price like that. Seems like if you raise the amount you'd be paying per month like $60 or so, you could continue hosting your site with plenty of room to grow. But then there's terrible support...

Thanks Steve. I didn't realise it was ultimately with RackShack as it's all done via www.49pence.com. I'm just adjusting picture quality at the moment and also checking how much bandwidth I'm losing to other sites linking to my pictures. When I've made the changes and checked the leaching stats I should have a better idea of what I can reduce this bandwidth to. I've got a feeling I'll be in touch though.

*nods*
$265 with lotsa Gigs left for growing room sounds good, especially since you know the host ain't gonna get sour on you because you run UBB and/or because you're using a lot of bandwidth. And only being charged by bandwidth sounds good...

TDTHost.com is hosted at Rackshack. Which means they rely on Rackshack support.

rackshack has 24/7 live support (phone, trouble ticket, and chat)... They can restore any server in 1-2 hours (for an extra fee, hehe). I really think they have great support.. especially for their prices... I think you are confusing support for server management… they won’t take care of the server for you, apply patches and that type of thing, you are on your own for that.. that's why they don't have good "tech" support... if the hardware breaks they fix it, they usually help with other stuff too.. but once again.. it's not a managed server place. You could always get an RS server and pay someone else (like me) to manage it Here are some more cheap dedicated server places (not sure how good all of them are): http://www.deluxnetwork.com/pgs/dedicated.php http://www.servepath.com/servers/index.htm http://www.serverbeach.com/catalog/index.php http://www.eservers.biz/ - good but they hardly ever get new servers in If anyone needs any more technical help with hosting you can e-mail me, we do a lot of web/e-commerce/networking/data management/security consultation, and I'd be glad to help some of you "off the clock", I know that I have gotten a lot of help here myself.
