A book that I started off with is "PHP and MySQL Web Development" by Luke Welling.

A good place to find scripts to take apart, put back together and learn from is http://www.hotscripts.com

Have a look around and get your hands wet.

Another good site is phpbuilder where you can find loads of implementations of the same thing from different users. This teaches you different programming techniques.

Alternatively there are two boards dedicated to PHP and MySQL here, so go ahead and ask if you are stuck somewhere.

yes this is a hack even though the script is pretty much stand alone.
