IE unstable with 6.0.1 - UBB.Developers

Some of my users (and even for myself) are experiencing instances when IE will just crash whenever we make a new post or reply to posts.. this problem is particularly acute when we use the 'instant graemlims'.

Any ideas what's the problem?

As much as I hate "me too" type posts, I thought I'd reply in support of benruth's post to say that since 6.0.1, my users too have reported many instances of IE crashing.

So much for my hopes of going live soon.

When will 6.0.2 be ready?

I haven't experienced this or heard any complaints.

Hope me saying that doesn't fill my email box with them. LOL

Well I did some testing earlier on the test board and all was fine.

I am on IE 5.5

What version had the problem?

I just encountered it again....

IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in
module MSHTML.DLL at 017f:70c9c056....

I am using IE 5.5

my users, some using IE 6.0/5.5

netscape thus far no complaints...

Have you had the problem here on Threads Dev?

Try going to the test board and seeing if you can duplicate it here.

This one is freaking me out.

You may want to update IE's VM (virtual machine) if there is an update available. The browser's virtual machine is what contains the javascript when it is ran. It is not uncommon to have a corrupted VM.

I or no other users have had a single complaint about browser issues. Hrmm... very strange.

okay, personally i have only experienced it twice since i have installed the upgrade 3 weeks ago.

my users are the ones who have been complaining about it... and they seem to be having fun posting about it every time they got the Illegal ops message box

i guess for them, the probabilty of them encountering this is much higher, cos they basically use this more like a chat board......

but i will see if i can re-experience the illegal ops here (in the test board)...

I use IE 6 and Netscape 7, on WinXP. I haven't had a single crash on either browser with any of the 6.0 betas or 6.0.1, after at least a couple hundred posts now. Granted, I don't use the instant graemlins very often (I'm so used to just typing them

), but I have used them, as well as the instant markup codes.

The error code you posted is often linked with a problem with javascript or a problem with an incorrectly placed anchor on the page. Is this always happening during a new post or new reply? Or when people are reading as well? Do you use any other javascript on the pages? Have you tried editing the templates to take out the instant graemlins, and see if the errors still occur?

Personal note -- It drives me nuts when members think that because they've gotten an error it must be something we're doing on purpose. As if we have nothing better to do than to see if we can crash their browser?

Our website tends to get particularly paranoid persons.

I'm crossing my fingers now hoping I don't start getting 50 emails a day from people whose browsers have crashed.

When you get page faults go to MS Knowledge Base and copy the error message into the search form. Select full search and you almost always get a result that helps. How much it helps is the real question. Here is what you get for that error under the cause section.

This can be caused by an XML file that uses an XSL file to create either an anchor tag (A) set to change the right frame or element that calls Window.open ("URL", "rightframe").

This only happens if the right frame is currently pointing to a page located on another domain. If the page is on the same domain, it works fine until the page changes to a separate domain.

I don't know if that's any help but threads is using xhtml. I'm betting that Miscrosoft uses an XSL file to translate xhtml into html before putting it into the Modzilla engine.

With that in mind you might want to check into the templates and make sure your html is good xhtml. You can also tell your users to upgrade when they complain.

Actually that's not entirely correct the VM is for Java not JavaScript. They are 2 different languages. Sun makes Java and JavaScipt came from Netscape. Altough you are right an update will fix the problem

I have just installed a clean installation of UBBThreads 6.0.2 and initiated a team of 4 volunteer users to attempt to crash this. In the two days that they used. One of the users have reported a crash using IE 6.0.

I have now extended the data collection to the present users (all 2309 of them) within the not-so-clean installation of 6.0.1, asking them for the OS used, the browser used and what they were doing at that time.

Will report back on it. I am actually more interested in what my clean-installation tester can glean.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that 6.0.2 solves most of your problems.

I've been running it for more than a week with just over 3500 members and I have less than a handful that are having any problems. (I don't believe these are browser related though.)

another of my testers from 6.0.2 have reported crashes in posting/replying..

i wonder why it does not happen in any other functions... why only in replies and new posts???? Is it safe to say that the problem is isolated in the mentioned functionality? So far no users of mine have complained about the forums crashing in any other window.

My browser version is Internet Explorer 5 and I am using Windows 98.

I use win98 and ie 5.5 and have never had a browser crash on 6.0.1 or 6.0.2

I have also never gotten any crash complaints from any of my board users.

Are these people who are crashing using some 'hacked' version of IE, such as one from AOL or one that comes installed on a computer and is altered by the manufacturer? In my experiences, most versions altered by others than the creators are unstable. Even if you upgrade off of a hacked version, it will probably leave behind stuff that will make it unstable.

most of my users are students (from 13 years to university level). Most likely they are using PCs from their school labs (which in Singapore means using IE).

In singapore, most of the time, the IE is supplied with the PC by the manufacturer.

Hmm... perhaps one reason why the crashes could have happened more frequently is because my users use the forum like an IRC.... a lot a lot of replies and posts, so the odds of getting an error by IE is higher (perhaps).

I am on Win 98 and IE 5.5, no crashes here.

Hmm, another thought. If you allow html to be used in posts or signatures, people could put some bad code or javascript in which could be causing the crashes.

I have all html turned off on my board ever since some punk kid put a REFRESH metatag in for a joke. I got a few complaints about that, lol

hmm.. the boards without html?? hmm.. that's a very weighty decision. I will try it out on my core testing group first...

Oh ya also, it's always replying to someone else's post that it crashes. Never replying to own post or while making a new post.

Wah, i still ok ah? Ok, let me do some constructive spam here. Do u ppl noe what is NUS-SANA? It stands for National University of Singapore-Singapore Anti-Narcotics Association. I am trying it out for one Semester. I will be trained to talk to ex-drug addicts and potential drug addicts in my home visits to them. Quite scary of the thought of meeting them face-to-face, but i hope watever i learn there could be used in CRuSH. But touch wood lah, hope our students can stay away from the curse of drugs.

I dunno why i chose SANA over NVAC, but i think this is fated in a cetain way. I met a senior in soci camp, and i started playing tricks on her via SMS. She blew my cover, and invited me to SANA camp. I was the only freshie there. When i left the camp, i was still not very enthu abt it, but i decide to try it for one Sem after another senior persuaded me to. I mean, if i did not mean that senior who i was playing tricks on, i wldn't know of SANA, becos the camp publicity was erh, negligible.

i'm running XP and use broadband....mine crashes when i multitask....

i.e. ICQ while submitting a post, or some other programs. Usually or never happens when I wait till a post is fully submitted, before I switch apps using alt-tab.
reading while switching does not seem to be a problem though (not very sure)

The only thing that I think could be causing this would be the javascript for the instant graemlins and markup. Those are only on the newpost/newreply screens. Other than that, it's just straight HTML. Strange thing is I've never had a crash and I use a variety of IE versions under XP, 2000 and 98.

They are using IE Version : 6.0.2600.0000 and
I have no problem using IE 5.5

I guess I didn't upload the whole 6.0x pack when I upgraded from 5.x to 6.x
