Here, play with my search... it's fairly simple, but it gets the job done. You can't search multiple fields, and results aren't in multiple pages, but otherwise our users like it... User Profile Search
And yes, it's in PERL... I'm soon going to have a PHP install running, and hopefully get all the hacks ported over.
