Not a *big* archive and maybe not too good, but I needed a GPL-ed font some time ago and found this one from google: http://www.thibault.org/fonts/staypuft/

Oh my, I like that Johnny robot fonts place! time to add more fonts... Thank god WinXP comes with Adobe Type Manager  ... otherwise I'd be screwed with almost 1500 fonts...

WinXP (and I believe 2000) comes with the free version of Adobe Type Manager to manage all fonts; therefore you can run a few thousand fonts without any issue just by using file -> install when in the fonts section of your control panel (or dragging fonts there).
