Trying to update the titles in the admin section, I'm getting the following errors:

Is your usertitles file in the filters directory writeable? That would be the first thing to check is make sure that the file is writeable, normally chmod to 666 or 664.

got it - what other files need to have write access?

Ok, the following files need to have write access.
All files in your stylesheets directory.
All files in the filters directory.
And from the main directory:
config.inc.php
theme.inc.php
UBB.threads Developer
