In wwwthreads.php about line 284 there's this line...
if ( ($config['newcounter']) && ($Username) )
The question is why is the variable $Username used and not the authenticated value of $user[U_Username]
It causes me problems because on my dev machine is a host of username cookies from various incarnations of w3t that set the $Username variable yet do not authenticate. The line above passes the if test and goes on to generate errors. If it checked $user[U_Username] then it would work as expected.
Before I make the change please advise whether there is a reason for the line as specified.

Should be no problem in changing that. Username actually comes from the w3t_myname set by the cookie in PHP so I'm not sure why outside cookies would interfere with that.

Should this be something that all 5.4.4 users should do?
Or is this only for those with problems?
Thanks

Only if you are experiencing problems. This bit of code has been in there since one of the first PHP versions and this was the first report on this, so you should be ok.
