We just upgraded from 5.3 Perl to 5.5PHP...and haven't had any problems. But we've got a user using Windows XP with AOL...and can't post. I've had him delete his cookies and he did, but when he posts...he gets the following message: We encountered a problem. The reason reported was: The host you are trying to send the input from is not a valid host. This is not necessarily an error. If you feel this is an error then it could be something as simple as your browser not being set to accept cookies. If you feel this error is a problem with the server then please contact... blah blah blah Any Ideas?

AOL's browser or IE 6.0? (think the latter ships with WinXP) Try having them place your site in the "allow" catagory click on Tools >> Internet Options >> Privacy >> Edit enter your site's domain and click "Allow" That's about it for my trouble shooting abilty here.. lol [] https://www.ubbdev.com/threads/php/images/icons/smile.gif[/]

Thanks Dave. My user tried your suggestion..but he still can't post. I've tried giving the user a different username...no luck. This User CAN send PM's and browse the forums fine. Anyone have an idea. This is a regular user who is furious with me for upgrading. HELP. [] https://www.ubbdev.com/threads/php/images/icons/smile.gif[/]

I had a similar problem with one (or maybe two users). But it occured not every time, and half an hour late he said it was gone. I did not investigate the user's configuration. But I saw in the code (5.4.1) that this errormessage is displayed, if the http_referrer does not start with the url given in the config file when posting.

I keep adding more info here..as I learn it...in hopes that it will help someone know what's wrong. I'm now running 5.5 PHP, but I had this user visit my old 5.4.5 Perl version. And he CAN post there. Should I let him use that version...or will using the TWO versions corrupt the database somehow. Does this shed any light on my problem?

Does this user have any programs that may hide his refer info or obscure his user-agent info some how? I believe there are changes in the databases between them versions so that may be a problem.

He's got no clue.... so I guess that's a No. I better tell him that posting on the old board is a bad idea...and had better "close" it. I don't want to screw up the database. I read something here about modifying a file so that the threads software doesn't check the refer... is that a good idea... should I do that? He was one of our regulars and a financial supporter of our site....so he is DRIVING ME NUTS! lol[] https://www.ubbdev.com/threads/php/images/icons/laugh.gif[/] Thanks for your help Dave!

Just currious but could you instruct him to go to http://www.chattersonline.com/test and sign up and then post? It's just a test area so no worries about getting emailed or what not. I am going to change it to allowing people to specify their passwords so they wont have to wait or get emailed. I just want to see if the same thing happens there. It's a clean install with the exception of my "whos online" box in the ubbthreads.php script.. but that should not matter. [] https://www.ubbdev.com/threads/php/images/icons/smile.gif[/]

Thanks - I will send him there. Your Index Page looks GREAT! I aspire to something like that. With time I guess I'll learn. [] https://www.ubbdev.com/threads/php/images/icons/smile.gif[/]

I just found that thread... you're very talented.
I've never hacked before...but just now have sucessfully done the "Who's online box" hack...and am working on the more compact header box. Then I'll have to look into working on that index page!

Dave, My user went to your test board...and registered...but got the same message when he tried to post. We encountered a problem. The reason reported was: The host you are trying to send the input from is not a valid host. He says: In reply to:
I very much doubt that its a problem with my ISP. I think it has to be some kind of bug in the UBB Threads. I don't know what else it could be, because we have tried almost everything else. (AND THE OLD PROGRAM STILL WORKS!) Of course, I can't explain why no one else has a problem. But maybe no one else has the same mix of AOL 7.0, Windows XP (home), and a DSL line. But, again, remember, too, I could not post from MSN and a dial up modem. Doesn't that rule out AOL and DSL as the problem?
I thought you might be interested in how my cookie changed after I came in through the old link last night:

Does all that info give anyone any ideas to a solution. I'm pretty convinced the problem is on his end...since it didn't work on Dave's test board...I know it's not my install. Or might there be some obscure issue with 5.5. Should I try 5.5.1 to see if it's fixed? Anyone have that installed somewhere that my user could go and see if he can post? Thanks!

I added a debug line at the end of each forum page where I display the referer (see: www.downhill-board.com). And I told the one user who had a problem posting, he should tell me what the referer is, when posting does not work. But now it seems to be ok again. I just added the following line before </body></html> in main.inc.php, function send_footer(): <br><div align="center" class="small">Referer: " . strtok(getenv('HTTP_REFERER'), "?") . "</div> Then you are able to find out, if it is a problem with the referer.
