Okay, I'm at a complete loss as to how to first obtain the files I need, and then how to go about installing them on my server.

I have a webhosted dedicated server running Red Hat Linux 5.2, Apache Web Server 1.3.20, MySQL 3.23.32 and PHP 4.06.

I'd love to upgrade to Red Hat Linux 7.2, Apache Web Server 1.3.24, MySQL 3.23.49a, and PHP 4.1.2 but I'm a complete NuB and I have no idea how to do any of that over a remote connection.

I've always done everything having physical access to a computer running a Windows OS. Doing things through a telnet session to a UNIX server is fairly new to me and I'm not even sure what commands to use.

Compound that with the fact that I can't seem to locate a LINUX distribution of the PHP upgrade.

http://www.php.net states:
In reply to:

We do not distribute UNIX/Linux binaries. Most Linux distributions come with PHP these days, so if you do not want to compile your own, go to your distribution's download site.

I have no clue how to compile my own version, and Red Hat only has a 4.06 distribution for PHP.

*sigh*

I really wish I knew more about UNIX servers. Should have gone with the Windows hosting. []/forum/images/icons/wink.gif[/]

Actually, the latest RPM of PHP for Red Hat Linux 5.2 is 4.06 which is what I have already. I guess no one wants to build an RPM for an older version of Linux. I suppose I could talk to my hosting company about upgrading to 7.2

Do you have telnet or ssh access?
If you do I can walk you through the upgrade.
contact me on ICQ UIN 34544061
I'll be on this evening. If I don't answer your IM then I'm away from the desk.
In the mean time grab all the sources so you have them ready.
Never use RPMs. They are just evil and don't teach anything about how to configure software. RPMs are always way behind current release.

I'll contact you tonight. It'll probably be around 5:30 PM PST because that's when I get home from work. I've downloaded the source code for Apache, PHP, and MySQL. I have root level telnet access, so I should be able to do just about anything we need. []/forum/images/icons/smile.gif[/]

OK. I'm at the office at the moment. I'll be home in about an hour or so. That would be right arround 10:30CST. Now I have to catch the train so I get home.
