Unless Scream specifically says he has inmediate plans to add this feature, and you have ways of hacking your way into it, maybe that´s what you should do.
If you´d like, you could probably fake subcategories, making another page have "faked" categories, wich link to the actual categories from within. That wouldnt involve hacking, just designing another page. But maybe thats not exactly what you want...
