In our environment we like to keep some forums for advertising news so we are working a lot with edit post in these to keep the number of threads low. In the Infopop Community Forum Rick works in the same way in his changelog Rick's changelog for 6.1 . We find it very useful to show edited posts as new in this case, otherwise you always have to check the post for any edits.
So we changed the modifypost.php to handle edited posts just as if they were new posts (indicator icons are updated etc.). So far this hack works fine for us but is not thoroughly tested. I attached a comparison of the original modifypost.php (Version 6.0.2) with our modified one. Only the relevant parts are shown, the added modifications are on the right side, shown in red.
For our needs it would be useful to alter the handling of edited posts to this way in future versions of UBB.Threads, but maybe we are the only ones who think so?

Regards
Stefan

I think it depends on whether the editing substantially changes the content of the post, or whether it's only to make minor corrections. In the former case, it would make sense to mark the post as new. In the latter case, it wouldn't.

Maybe the "mark as edited" checkbox should be used to determine whether the edited post gets treated as a new post.

If so, one problem is that checkbox is not present when a moderator or administrator is editing another user's post. I've hacked my board so that the checkbox is always present. Possibly the same (trivial) hack should be incorporated with the new proposed feature.

Possible complication: What if you edit a post to correct an insignificant typo (so the post should not be flagged as new), but forget to uncheck the box? If you go back and re-edit the post with the box unchecked, is it possible to "reverse" the new status?

This solution sounds good to me. It leaves everybody the choice how to handle it. I don't think there will be a way to restore the original postdate without major changes in the script and database but I could live with the risk to alter the date "accidentally".
I hope this option makes it in the standard features of UBB
