I have been workingon IIP 6.0's calendar as much as possible. Well, except for a break to play with my own website since I have been neglecting it for a while. But anyhow, while monkeying with the calendar today it occured to me that the way I have things layed out I probably could allow for "personal" calendars as well. Users could store their events viewable only to themselves or perhaps have an option so others can see their upcoming events too. I dunno...

I may not add this in right away but it could be done anytime later.

Thoughts?

Personal calendars would be awesome. Also, we really would like the option of a Birthday calendar, that would just store the birthdays of members (though I think we'd need to end up limiting it to only members who have posted in a while, since we have 4000+ members now and not all of them are still around.) I'd really like to see a generic website type calendar, that could hold events/dates for the website itself, viewable to everyone. Then the ability to have personal calendars for each person. Then a birthday calendar as well.

I know, I don't want much. But you were asking for thoughts.

As far as allowing others to view the personal calendar if you choose, I don't think it would be as valuable as the other ideas, but it might for some sites.

They'd be very interesting to the 5-10% of the members who would actually use it... me, I'm not that organized

Nevertheless, it's a cool addition, just won't get used a whole lot

For forum events posted to the calendar, will users be able to comment on them ala calendar 3.0?

The calendar code I'm working on is my own brew... The only thing simular to the one Max and GameJag? 's calendar is that you'll still be able to give specific boards calendar support. There is no real interaction with the .threads scripts either because it just got messy and I didn't like it. I think the only thing that .threads will need to do as far as front-end displays go is perhaps to display a calendar link in the forums list next to the board title or something when that board has a related calendar. This calendar has about 1/10th the queries that "calendar 3.0" has to cover a month's worth of events. I haven't allowed for "replies" to events as of yet but it's on the list.

The calendar sports a "master" calendar for the entire site as well as allowing for individual boards to be assigned a calendar too. User's birthdays can be displayed using a birthday timestamp from their stored data. I haven't put the Military Time/Civilian Time displays in but the European calendar format with the first day of the week being Monday can be toggled on and off.

Still a number of things on the list of "to do's"... lol

JustDave,

Let me start out by saying that IIP is an absolute work of genius. As for personal calendars, that would be a wonderful idea!

My new forum (and yes, I mean very new ) will deal with fishing (yup, like hundreds of others ) with emphasis on flats fishing in Florida. I hope to expand the site to include other states as I get suggestions and volunteer moderators to handle the new areas. With personal calendars included, it would give members an opportunity to display scheduled tournaments, classes, seminars, etc. that are coming up in their particular areas. Your idea has great merit, and I would love to see it when you decide to add it in.

Thanks again for the hard work!

Thanks DeepHull

That's a use I hadn't thought of so now I can see where such a feature would be handy.

Personal calendars would be a neat feature. Again, the majority of people would not use it, but for the ones who did, they would love it I'm sure.

As for the calendar in general... That is the only real feature on my site I need nearly immediately. But I am patient. Just wish all of my users were

Doesn't Calendar 3.0 work with .threads 6.1?

It may be a bit before I'm done with IIP 6.0 as I'm trying to put some time into my own site as well. (I don't have an idea of how long "a bit" is either... lol)

Its ok.. they are now just using the calendar forum for just posting events.. without the graphical calendar itself. 3.0 does work, but it wasn't quite what I was looking for, so I don't want to install it just to have to remove it when IIP6 comes out.

I just told them tough crap, they can wait
