My users have been hounding me to get a user map going to look up people in their area, seems like you could use the "location" field in a users profile to out put a user map. Here is one I found: http://www.godsofoffroad.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=;action=mmall;defmap=usa Looks like it is part of yabb, could we get something like that? Might get real crowded by state if you have a lot of users though, maybe show red pins by state, but when you click on any of them from one state it simply opens up a list by state, then users can browse from there. What do you think?

That's a great feature! Just some minutes ago I found another site with a similar user-map. Then I came here and found your suggestion, what a surprise I really like the implementation, it covers the whole world and still is a clear display of all users locations. Looks simply perfect. It's a Mod for YaBB: MemberMap 2.1. Maybe we could ask the developer if we can port his mod over to ubbt.

I too have been struggling with this type of mod myself. We have a recovery list that people can use to see who ot call in their area if they get stuck. At one time we had a map of michigan just in plain HTML with an image map that had to be manually updated. That got to be a real PITA so I scratched that and now I just made it so people can automatically enter data and display as a text list. I would eventually still like to do the map but I had no idea how that would work

After a closer look... looks like the Mod works with simple pixel-coordinates. The user has to place a pin on one of the available maps. So just the name of the map and x/y is stored in his profile. That's just my guess, because you can't see any pins on the "Northamerica"-map, but eight on the "USA"-map. If it would work with longitude and latitude the pins could be displayed on every map that covers several smaller extracts.
I would prefer longitude and latitude - but anyway, a very nice mod!

This is a great feature ! Looking around YaBB has serveral nice features. I especially like how they package their mods to be self applying.

they have something like this at albinoblacksheep.com
It would be cool if the map was displayed on your profile and you could put the pin in it from there and type a short message that displays when your icon is hovered over.
This would be great for me because the forum I run is for nurses, mainly travel nurses who travel all across the country. They would love this for keeping up with where others are at.

What? They have that Triumph the insult comic dog one where he makes fun of the star wars nerds. That is the funniest thing I've ever seen in my life. I watch it once a week!

Would someone be more motivated to make this hack if there was money involved? I am willing to pay for something like this. I think it is a great idea and it would be an awesome addition to my site......anyone?

Hmmmm .. I might be interested in doing that. I'll take a look at the above links, and see what's involved.

Basically storing X/Y coordinates and map name for each user then displaying the graphics accordingly.

I'd like for them to be able to type in a short message as well. For instance, "Jane Doe, rn, on assignment in San Diego California" whenever the mouse is hovered over their cursor.

I'm also interested in a function to show users by location, a map is not required in my case.

I thought I would dredge up this old request. I was also in the list of folks who thought this would be a great addition to my site, but could never find one that worked. Well, I've found one that works...with some hacking around with it. It's called Globe*Trotter and you can find it here: http://www.xenolth.biz/Here is my (in-progress) implementation of it: http://www.CustomTacos.com/usermapNotice that I changed the map, since my site really caters only to people in the US. Obviously, you can use any map image you choose. I hacked it a little so that each person's name and the "person" icon on the map can be clicked to take you to their UBB.T profile. There's still some work left to be done on it, like making it so that if you're not logged in through UBB.T you can't place an icon on the map. Drawbacks? It looks like users can't change/delete their icon once it is placed on the map. I can remove their rows from the db where the data is kept, but it would be nice to have a way for them to be able to do it themselves. I'd love to see what you guys think of Globe*Trotter, especially those of you who have been wanting something like this. So far, I think it's pretty good. Jeff CustomTacos.com

ok first off how you linking it to the map? you actually using lat and long of where they are? if you are I would use one of the extra fields in Threads for zipcode and then have a database for this that uses that field from the users table to link to a lat and long in the map database and then use that lat and long to display it on the map then whenever the user changes his zipcode it will change to there and if the zipcode isn't in the map database it won't display..

I think there on to something, looks cool, but what does it look like when you have 3,000 people from the same state?

You can change the icons for the marker points, so instead of using the little "people", you could use a small red dot maybe. That would take up less space on the map if you have lots of users in one spot. I'm also considering doing this, mostly because I have a lot of users in SoCal.

Hmmm, I wonder if you could click on a state and bring up a list of everyone in that state, that might work better for the larger states like Cali, you could still have the dots but then you could scroll down the list.

I'd love to see this done as a hack! How awesome! Especially if it could automatically place the icon on the map if the person entered a zipcode in their profile.

I installed globetrotter on my site. It lets several people add their icons, and then somewhere along the way it won't display the info when they hover and I get the error "Line 201 Char 5 Display is Undefined Code 0" in my gobetrotter.php file I have reinstalled the SQL tables a few times, which fixes it until several members drop icons. Did anyone encounter this problem, or would you be willing to share the mods you did on the code?

I don't know, but I commissioned him to do it for my site. I'm fuzzy on the details, but if he did it for me as an independent contractor, then I would have the rights to release it wouldn't I? Otherwise, why wouldn't he have released it himself anyway? Someone ask him I guess. Is he still even around on here? I have no problem giving out what I have, if he doesn't mind. You can check it out at www.ultimatnurse.com by clicking on "user map" in the nav bar. (duh )

I haven't seen him around for a while but it would be a neat mod to have. Meanwhile, I installed Globetrotter that Calpy mentioned above and it is a pretty sweet setup although I haven't incorporated it into the threads db but I may look into it.

If you paid for the work you should be able to do whatever you like including release it to the general public unless there was a previous agreement to not do so
