I was wondering, if I set the shoutbox to update ever 5 seconds, and set a link to open the shout box in a new window, with a large size...it seems to work nicely as a chat room...however...as I haven't oficially opened my site yet, would doing this really bog down performance and load times?

I don't think so... but 5 minutes might be too fast a refresh time. If you are typing in the shoutbox window, and it refreshes while you are typing, you lose what you are typing. So you might need longer for the slower typists.

Actually, the shoutbox in IIP 5.3 only updates if the input box is unfocused. Every time you activate the input box, the counter is stopped and it is restarted when inactivating it.
I tend to use it when I'm reading the backlog so that it won't update while I'm reading. Just click in the input box to focus it, and then I go to the top and read the whole thing without being disturbed by refreshes. Really nice. =]

Take a look at the html source at the very end if there is some javascript functions called autorefresh(), startRefresh() and stopRefresh(). This was added in 5.2 or 5.3, don't know for sure, I just added it to my 5.1 install. =]

[/] Yeah, I tested it, it's on my site, created a "chat" link across the top if you want to check it out...also set the timer for 5 seconds, not 5 minutes...I haven't any users yet, just wondering if that'de create a huge load on the server or not http://www.ROTrader.com

It doesn't work on a mac ... my mac users are complaining heavily about it so I am redesigning the sjout to a chat with a seperate page to type and some features as who's online next to the chat ...
when I finished this thing up I can post it for mac users if you want ...

My shoutbox went kaput... when I upgraded to 6.2.3
Anybody else have that problem? Now it doesn't put the information typed in the box into the scrolling screen. Just goes blank when entered. I removed the box from my registered nav links. But it still is broken in the iip 5.3
Ideas?

Hmmm...
There were no significant changes in 6.2.3. You might want to reinstall IIP (or at least the various shout box scripts). We have it working here no problem.

Shoutbox is superb! I installed this great mod this week and people love it.
They have asked if there is any way of adding to the threads in the forums.. I've tried including the script in the header for the forums, but that doesnt work..
Is there any way to include the shoutbox on a forum easily?

Maybe just a URL that opens the window on the desktop like the main menu does? that woud be fine, thus giving the users the option to open it to their desktop.
