Rather than showing a bunch of error messages to users would it be better to have some sort of message that you are unable to connect to the database if that is the case and show the forum down for maintenance? I was thinking of this when looking over some of the other forums here and what happens when a user keeps going back to a forum that is experiencing errors. It might look better for the administrator if it appeared that they were aware of the problem and you had a message that the forum was down for maintenance instead. Just my thoughts on it.

I created a modification for that. It displays custom error messages to the user depending on the kind of database error that occured. This way, you won't get any ugly error messages even when your mysql server is down. I haven't documented it yet, but I use it for a while on my own site. It isn't very complicated, so I should be able to document it in the next days if you're interested in it.
