I'd like to be able to have non paid members NOT be able to change their avatar, but paid can. This would probably be a variation on Josh's MyPayPal mod. Doable?

Sure, assuming that paid members are in a special group or otherwise marked as payed members. The MyPayPal mod works with groups, so you only need to check if the user is in that group or not and deny/allow avatar changes based on the result.

You can check out the Modifications / Addons forum over at threadsaddons, there are a couple mods there that you can probably tweak for this.

I did what astaran suggested and added a 'Avatar' group, coupled with MyPayPal mod. works great, but alas, i didn't save every modification in a formal mod submission.
Level of difficulty: easy-medium (depending if you are a programmer)
MyPayPal addon worked great and we exteneded it to.. allowing 'Search' and 'PM' functions too.

Im looking for something like this as well...
To allow normal unpaid users to LINK to off site avatars....
BUT allow paid supporting users the option and ability to UPLOAD an avatar to our system...

wouldn't you want to use caution using off site avatars?
I thought if they host on a slow site or there is some issue w/ their DNS it could impede the performance of your site?

Lots of users have used off site avatars on my sites, and had no problems... The thing with on site avatars is extra bandwidth... And wanted a way to have paying users have on site avatars... Although, now, I have moved to a new webhost, where it doesnt matter much anymore... soooooooo.... oh well... Deej
