I haven't looked into this but I thought I would throw it out to see how easy (or difficult) you guys think this would be. Since my board is based on attachments, it would be nice to see the attachment icon on the postlist page even if the attachment is made as a reply. Then users wouldn't have to sift through every post to see if someone replied with an attachment.

Here you go Eric.

It should be very easy to adapt the changes to 6.4

Thanks Twisty! I don't know that I want to encourage my users to use Expanded view though, it seems to grind my board to hault.

Is that right? I default my boards to expanded and it poses no prob...hmmm. I guess it really depends on how busy the site is, as well as the server setup being used. I'm an expanded view guy myself, could never use collapsed

It gets pretty busy on my site, when I click on expanded it can take up to ten or more seconds to load up a page full of posts. I would prefer it if it weren't even an option for the users, very intensive.

Ok that makes sense. It helps *hugely* for the postlist. Probably about 4x faster.

The compression will make it even tougher on the server, as it's compresed server side. It's just sending a smaller page. If your server is beefy that'd be ok. But if your server is dancing around max load, gzip will make it work harder.

Yep I fully agree, but from my experience, that much delay seems like a page size issue more than a server overload one because speaking for myself, the expanded postlist page would take forever to display for me without compression and I don't have a real busy board, just average.

So basically, enabling compression would quickly demonstrate what the bottleneck is. If it's still loading just as slow (or gasp! even slower) afterwards then yeah, the server is being overwhelmed. Although imo, it would take a *real* busy site to cause that :-)

But I think I remember him mentioning that he does in fact have a lot of traffic, so perhaps he falls into that category
