Hello sorry if someone has asked this before, I did do a search before hand. I was wondering if there is a posibility to make the banning system for the forum software more secure. I was wondering because of a forum I frequent that is plagued by people that continuously come back in new accounts after either being IP banned and having their account banned. Im not really an expert on such things as coding forums and the forums I frequent have no relation to me other than I am a normal user there.

Welll if they been IP banned yet get a new IP then there isn't much ya can do except email ban them but they can just get a new email also.. there is no secure way to ban someone if they do not want to be banned... Well unless ya go to their home and at gunpoint blow them away...

sigh I feared as much. This is the forums biggest problems. We ban someone and they come back just to cause more hell. Thanks for informing me though.

Edit: I know there are rules against two ideas in one thread but since my first has been quickly dismissed. I was wondering how possibly it was to crack spam accounts (ex: 000000) and post on them. This is another problem we have. If you want you can look at the forum http://gbxforums.gearboxsoftware.com/ubbthreads.php?Cat=&C=2

There are several mods for 6.3/6.4 versions which can significantly help (I use all 4)...

Multiple Identity Detector - As long as they don't clear their old cookies, then you can detect them...

https://www.ubbdev.com/forum/showflat...true#Post107001

X_FORWARDED ver 1.0.1 - Checks to see if they're using a proxy and will display both their real IP and the proxy IP. Only works for transparent proxies though (the majority thankfully), and not anonymous ones.

SHOW BANNED - I wrote this one myself. It helps you to keep track of banned users, all the IP's they've used and more.

https://www.ubbdev.com/forum/showflat...true#Post118889

SHOW POST IP - Allows you to search an IP number or range and return all users who have posted under it.

Of course nothing can fully prevent someone who's both knowledgeable and determined to be an pain however, but these mods can go a long way for many problem people.

6.3 would be the one which allows you to install all of 'em (and which is the version I use). If you're using 6.5, then you're on out of luck because I don't think any of them have been updated to it.

I think the way how the information about the banned users is stored in the database changed in 6.5?

Hmm, I really couldn't tell you. After spending many hundreds of hours tweaking my boards, I'm never upgrading again...that's for damn sure

Hi,

I can confirm that "Multiple Identity Detector" and "SHOW BANNED" work with 6.4.1. Using both of them, very usefull.
