They blew up their vB when they tried to pack a few hundred concurrent users on it...

I'm surprised that the UBB is handling things as well as it is though....

I think it was the number of posts that they had that made the vB slow...we'll just have to wait for the UBB to populate a little more then we can start ranting smile

I agree with GoTo, I think they had too much space taken which slowed it down.

I am positive you'll find much fairer treatment of vB on this site than UBBâ„¢ gets on their site.

It's amazing how their posting policies on their site begin to mimick those of ubbdev and IP when they get even a little positive reaction regarding ubb in their forums. The same policies they enjoy slamming ubbdev and IP for...

Anyways, yes, they switched to UBB, best of luck to them... do not start a vB vs. UBB slugfest in here or we'll need to hand out more pink slips.

Year we hardly bash or taunt any forum companies on this board but the others are lets say a little more meaner.

I had both (vB leased though) and their both good,
except that vB has way more features, and it has good speed included too.
Though I'm glad UBB has no database stuff, it breaks my head laugh

Just out of curiousity why won't UBB uses MySQL for their UBB?

Hiya certify,

Your question has been answered several times here already (you know, you could have used the SEARCH command which is blazingly fast on vB but pathetically slow on UBB wink ). The answer is that UBB is designed to run on the widest set of servers possible. Many servers still don't support MySQL and that's the primary reason why.

However, I do know of a person who converted Ultimate.cgi (UBB 5) to use a MySQL backend and is doing very well. His topics are pulled via PHP too smile (a PHP, mySQL UBB .. wow!).

ive taken a look at what it would take to convert a version 6 to using a SQL backend, and its not too bad. but im not gonna start a project like that with 6.1 just a few weeks off.

There are a few people looking to do this jordo, when 6.1 comes out. You might contact MasterMind when 6.1 is released to assist him in doing it. At least bounce ideas and trouble-shooting off each other. smile

UBBDev has 5 times as many members and posts, we're doing better.
vB uses mySQL, and its NOT the mySQL that screws things up. Its the way vB handles mySQL. (I heard that from a real PRO on usenet)

A vB can get buggy sometimes and I'd say the mySQL does this, I don't think it's very reliable with a mySQL database.

its still only 3500 users, they had more than that before.. i agree we have to wait and see what happens, may be interesting. (may be interesting also their upgrade to 6.1). it is handling 150 concurrent users though smile

and sometimes i get cgi timeout here; this happening only with me?

That concludes they use IIS, so it must be a Win2k or WinNT server.
vB won't run very stable on a Win2k server now will it?
I'm not sure though, no experience with vB on a Windows server.
It does work smoothly on an Apache server though smile

vB works fine on any decent server on any platform whether it be Windows or UNIX. mySQL is supported on both platforms as is PHP.

That's not what I said... read cc's reply on the first page of this thread...

gonna close this thread as it has outlived its original topic... really don't want a bunch of quotes taken out of context...
