guys, hows the compatibility with w9x software? i heard microsoft released a compatibility patch, does it work ok?
im thinking about using xp here.. my machine has 128ram 450mhz, do you know if itll handle it?

450mhz should be fine. I put XP on my family's computer which runs at 400, and it does decent. 128mb of memory is gonna be your biggest bottleneck though. Since memory is dirt cheap right now, I'd suggest adding *at least* another stick of 128, or more than that if possible. On my own computer, it currently reports using 119mb of physical memory, and that's running nothing but Windows and its standard services, Apache server, and Winamp. So add lots more memory if you can. The only 9x program I've ever had a problem with on XP is the BlackIce firewall, and even using the compatibility manager thingy it won't work. Microsoft has a net-based compatibility checker if you're unsure, so try THIS to check your hardware and software. Hope this helps. ---Jamin

I heard it was only compatiable with 700Mhz and Over. I'm running 64MB and 450Mhz and I might upgrade my RAM and upgrade to XP. But I think I'm getting a new comp soon.

Jamin, XP comes with a built-in firewall, simply called "Internet Connection Firewall," but you need to turn it on before you can use it. Go to Start> Search and do one on "firewall." It'll tell you more than I can, and even give you links to turning it on. However, I use a hardware firewall here, so I've never actually tested it. You wanna be a guinea pig and tell us how it goes?

Professional ran fine on 128mb of ram for me, I think you would be limited on a 64mb machine, but you could always upgrade. I threw a 512MB card in and WoW! [ 01-23-2002 05:02 PM: Message edited by: RANCH4x4 ]

wow thanks guys i read the system req. at microsoft, just wasnt sure if it would run sloppy at the recommended settings well, off to make some backups... how much is a 256 stick? better yet, how do i check my memory type to see which one to buy?

That's what I'm saying too. Their prices are outstanding, and their customer service is only surpassed by the quality of their products.
A couple dollars difference can save you hours of frustration and troubleshooting that can happen when you buy "cheap" ram.

Yeah, that firewall is crap. Dave2, it also has *something* to do with outgoing, because it messed up my mp3 server in mIRC. I could download files, but it blocked my server from sending them. Turned it off and they ran fine again. Dunno what that's all about.

well men dont need food that much do we matt, i think i saw some post made by you somewhere with an application for changing xps look... freeware i think..?.. im not sure if i like this blue thing here O_o i installed plus also but that "space" and "da vinci" things... my memory is 128 sdram pc100, its not fast, but its running fine so far.

I have it installed at work on a P233, 64 meg of ram. =)
This was simply to do screenshots for it. While it runs slower than snot down a flag pole outside in January, it does work.

Well like the requirements said some things may not work with 64MB Ram, so it's better to be safe with 128MB.

I'd use 128mb as a minimum, 192 works great, thats what I used for a while until I decided the more the merrier.

Yea, more ram is usually better -- XP supports alot, its the mobos you have to ask. 256 is good, but I have 512 soon to have 1gig or 640... POWER USER! http://www.petitiononline.com/ttv1/
