See it here!
Bout time.
Cool Read it and you really spent some time including alot of the hacks we regularly add in. Now all that is left is the sub-forums.
Hmmmmm...

he he 20 minutes. LOL
Yay! I was leery reading this, but you came through this time. I guess we can trust you again, until you cry wolf! .

Thanks man
We've deciced not to include sub-forums at this time. Basically it came down to trying to keep some similarity between the products and this was a feature that would have created some headaches for customers that are switching to/from .threads and another Infopop product. Plus when we do add sub-forums I'd like to figure out how to make them any level deep. What I had in mind was only 1 level deep.

My fault for spouting off my mouth too soon But I think there will be enough new stuff with 6.4 it should keep everyone happy
Yes there is enough to keep people happy in 6.4 Rick!!

Good Job!

However I must point out though that besides all the crappy coding and fancy stuff with VB,--- SUBFORUMS are a main part of the coding and draw when choosing that software.

Crossing my fingers for 6.5
Sound very impressive.

I have to ask this: Can you provide any screenshots of the calendar? I'm currently evolving several calendar applications which may not be necessary if the ubb.threads calendar provides all necessary functionality and a clear layout.
Very Impressive Astaran,

I don't think I have seen a change log that long from the get go. Usually Rick keeps adding but this thing is way long the first day it is released. Rick has been doing alot of work.
Hurray! Our patience has paid off!
Yay better polls!

That's an amazing list of features. I'm really looking forward to it.

A friend and I created a calendar add on specific to the game we play on, will be interesting to see if we can hook our code into the new calendar.

*sits on the edge of his chair and eagerly awaits release*
Yay!!! I guess I won't have to release my terrible revenge. You just made the deadline. This weekend was terrible revenge time. But now I do a happy dance instead.

Awesome feature set. I was really hoping for the subforums though. Hopefully in 6.5 though. :crossed fingers:
Guys I can tell you Rick has been working his Butt off for sure - and the results are visible.

I think everyone's going to love it.

As for screenshots.... LOL better ask ADK.
Cool - they put in the Ignore User and moved the admin buttons I was complaining about.

Now, how about the User browing this forum hack? Its nice to see a list of who is actually browsing the forum - the numbers dont tell much.
Great work, Rick. Even without the subforums

Are you still planning the subforum feature this way that the parentforums will contain (show) all posts of their subforums? Just to make me sleep tonight
Hi,

Excellent!

We are still on 6.1.1, but reading this one I think this may be the one to make us upgrade. Some really cool additions.
The polls is something my members have been bitching about for a while already and I know my mods and I will love the new thread maintenance features.

The ignore feature will also cut down on keeping the peace

Any time frame on a release date?

Sanuk!
[:"pink"]Do you mean to show two forum listings at once (one for the parent forum, one for the subforum)? That would be a bit cumbersome. I would prefer something like this. One difference though is that it should have a collapse/expand button.[/]
[]Do you mean to show two forum listings at once (one for the parent forum, one for the subforum)?[/]
Not really. It would exactly look like in your vBulletin example link (But I'm not sure if all of the posts from all of the subforums are shown below).

Just imagine a subforum like a filter for the parentforum. In the parentforum you can have an overview of all posts, or go deeper into a subforum to see just a subset of the posts.
Re the calendars - I hope we will have the ability to have multiple copies rather than just a board wide one.

Great feature list - should be out in beta next week then

Hi,

"Just imagine a subforum like a filter for the parentforum. In the parentforum you can have an overview of all posts, or go deeper into a subforum to see just a subset of the posts. "
Now this is something that I would very much like to see implemented.

Sanuk!
[:"pink"] Maybe there should be an admin option to have the subforum act as a filter for the parentforum, or for a subforum to act like a seperate forum. [/]
Awesome feature set - my favorite hack (Calendar) will have a variant included as standard, which means I am down to only a few hacks left, LOL.

Which is a good thing!
Yes, fewer hacks makes for easier upgrades. eace:
Hmmmm, I wonder why it didn't process eace: correctly???
Probably because :p is before it in the list.
Cool, any time frame?
Did someone say "screenshot?"
Hey, I found an early beta of 6.4: https://www.ubbdev.com/beta/ubbthreads.php

LOL

That's the 6.3 beta.

6.4 has not entered private beta yet. When it does you all are welcome to visit my beta test site and play.
hehehe, why did you mention that so quickly? Just remove the "6.3" at the bottom and everyone will be very pleased playing around with it - I'm quite sure
But then DLW wouldn't be able to try and sell screen shots.

I have the same opinion. subforums is a must, more than this stupid calendars. A calendar is a nice addon for a forum but subforums are a basic feature.

The password protection hack from Josh is one of the things I've waited for since months and really ass kicking :-)
Thanks Josh for this great one!

Hey Josh, if the guys from Infopop don't know to handle the subforum stuff, maybe you can write a hack for that?
I second that! Plus, when Rick says he wants subforums on any level, does that mean "any forum can be a subforum of any other forum"? I hope so, up to and including forums from different categories being subforums of another forum
So is there no hack at all for making sub-forums? Josh, didn't you mention that you made a hack like that before?

No I never have... I think JustDave might have.
Is it not sub-categories people really want??

I think if you look at VB it is really a CATEGORY.
Yeah, subcategories would make sence, subforums not (in my opinion).

I tried to explain that in this thread.
No, people want subforums

Since months I think about subforums the way Astaran explained them in the other thread. I don't like the idea of subcategories as they can not contain all posts of their subforums.

A toggle in the configfile for the behaviour of the sub%-stuff would be nice, so we all get what we want.
What is the advantage of getting all threads displayed twice?
Once in the forum and another time in the subforum?
Forum A
Subforum A.1
Subforum A.2

Why read the subforum A.1 and A.2 if you can read all posting in Forum A?
Maybe a better overview?
Then their would be no reason for forum A.

Some other problems:
How can a user determine in which forum a thread is located?
Search results will be confusing cause the thread will appear there twice also?

If a user is interested only in A.1 he can go into subforum A.1 and will only see posts that are of interest.

If a user likes to know all about A, he goes into forum A. No need to go deeper into the subs.

Search results will be displayed only once, because every posting is still unique in the db.

If you have
Cat A
Forum A.1
Forum A.2

where do you post a new topic that does not fit into A.1 and A.2, but generally into A?
Into Forum A.0 for all general discussions about that topic.
I think the whole forum topology needs to be rethought. Instead of structured as a tree, it could be structured as a network, or some kind of relational entity.
[]Astaran said:

I tried to explain that in this thread. [/]

oooh it makes sense. I have the need for this for example.

forum1
-forum1a info (public)
-forum1a news (public)
-forum1b internal (protoected)

this is nothing you can handle with subcategories.

subforums are one of the main reasons why I am thinking of switching over to vB 3.0

they have no also so nice things like public or usergroup votes etc.

I know that many many features are only nice to have but sometimes they are really useful.

With 6.4 ubbt is coming near to the featurelist of a vb3 but vb has still its nose in front and thats something that was not the case 2 years ago. everyone had an infopop ubb classic and not a vb but the people love the hacks and that they're going to implement all crap :-)

90% of the boards never have more then 3000 users and actual webserver have enough power to deal with many many forum queries so implement what is possible and ask later on who needs it :-)
I'll take any sort of sub
I agree w/ Omegatron & Astaran. I'd rather have subcategories. One other thing which seems simple enough which I would like is to make it so a forum could appear in more than one category.
I have two additional things:

1: Announcement for all forums via Adminmenu
If you want to post an announcement into all forum it should be possible to mark the single forums or simply all and write a text. The Announcement should be place above the threads as single table and not as sticky thread.

2: Defineable forum creation templates
I offently have to create the same type of forum where only the name is different. They have the same usergroups and the same descriptions and settings so it would be nice if this could be predefined.
Not onlt 'create forum' but 'create forum or forum based on template' would be really helpful
You might want to post the suggestions at the IP community - they might get missed here.

But I agree an announcement type post would be good - but with the ability to control which forums it is displayed in.
[]1: Announcement for all forums via Adminmenu [/]
I've done a hack for this and send it over to Josh. I don't know weather he ported it to 6.3 or/and has documented it yet.

Good to know that there might be a hack which can solve this but this is exactly what I am talking about. Why not directly implementing such stuff to make it a standard?

If someone don't need it he/she simply makes no announcement and thats it ;-)

I think Josh has direct contact with Rick so it would be nice to take this as a suggestion.

Its not easy to follow all requests but implementing hacks which are already existing couldn't be so hard or?
Rick has so much knowledge about all that stuff that (I think) it should only be rewriting and testing or?

Make it a killer application or discuss day by day why people should buy an ubbt if they can have a vb3 for less or an phpbb2 for free. Am I wrong if I say that features make a board attractive? Turn off what you don't need as admin but as author give the people all you can or?
All the features have to come down from Infopop.... so make sure you post them at the Feature Suggestion forum over at Infopop Community.
That's how they end up included.
Infopop="Offical Threads Site"
Threadsdev="Threads Geeks who like to tear apart and rebuild Threads in thier own image"

I think that about sums it up.
Hmmm......

Well navaho said that we could "have a ball with it, tease your friends and neighbors with it because they can't get one yet ".... so what the heck.

If you are eager to see the development beta of 6.4 in action.... go to my site http://www.joshuapettit.com and play.

Try to break it, I dare ya.
Post any bugs you find there so that I can report them through the proper channels.

Three words...

New Polls RULE!

Thanks for the peek Josh!
wheee!!

eace:
yeah! great new search engine amazing calendar
I love the calender. It looks really good.
When I attempted to created a user for the threadsdev test board it gave the following error:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: headers() in /home/virtual/site2/fst/var/www/html/beta/adduser.php on line 451
danke... scream has been on a bug-squashing tear this morning... the next beta will be much better

It registered slayer60 but it didn't email me the password...just to be more specific.
When I requested my password it came from:
[][email protected][/] <[email protected]>; [][email protected][/] <[email protected]>

Not sure if it is a bug or a config thing.
Allen, did you update the adduser.php file on that site? It's trying to find a headers() function which should no longer be in any of the code.
I would just like to thank Scream for letting us get our grubby mits on the developement copy of 6.4. It looks spiftastic.
Posted By: slayer60 Who's online page - 08/21/2003 9:56 PM
This seems like a bug. When viewing the "Who's Online" page, under "Anonymous Users" it displays this:

Anonymous 08/21/03 12:32 PM Viewing their "My Home"
Posted By: JoshPet Re: Who's online page - 08/21/2003 9:59 PM
Thats usually when google or such hits the start_page.php.

Who's online locaion is just based off whatever script they've hit. That happens normally, likewise you can see anonymous users "editing their profile" and such. They aren't really. Usually the bots are just hitting an error message that they must be logged in.
Updated to 6.4 Dev 2 - so you can go bang on it some more.
Hey Josh
This has prolly been covered but have a quick question on how the new calander and birthdays work for 6.4, will there be an option to not have birthdays in the calander? The reason I ask is that with 15,000 users in my forums there would almost be certain someones birthday on every single day of the year making it very frustrating to find events. (every day would be a link to someones b-day)
Hmmmm....

Looks like currently there's an option to turn the birthday listing on and off for the main forum page. I don't see any way to restrict them from the calendar.

Rick?
"Added a column to display the user's avatars on the member list"

Hey ! This is from me ! ( Avatars in user list)

COOL

Yeah, it might be a good idea to have an option to turn off for the calendar as well, large sites will have every day of every month show as a link to birthdays, then when someone has an event it will just get lost in the shuffle, then no one will want to use it.
I would definitely agree with ColoradoK5's opinion to have the birthdays showing on the calendar an optional thing. Even with a relatively small user base (compared to his), it would clutter up the calendar, IMHO.
third to say that about the calendar... I'd rather have it for site specific events, not birthdays. So that should definately be an option, or at least not display on the main calendar.
Ok, you're wish is my command! Option added

That is awesome, thanks
[]Scream said:

Right on!! eace:
how we did it with the ubb calendar was give an option in the control panel so that you can decide that if there's more than 2 birthdays on a particular date it was changed to one clickable entry birthdays [4] keeps the calendar clean

{option not turned on there )

Wow, this thing is just moving along isn't it Great work!
Posted By: omegatron Re: New 6.4 Beta On Board - 09/19/2003 4:14 AM
We should see a new version for the holidays if all is well looks like.
Posted By: msula Re: New 6.4 Beta On Board - 09/19/2003 4:52 AM
Which holiday? canadian thanksgiving? halloween? election day? veterans day? usa thanksgiving? hanukkah? christmas? new years?

But yeah, should see it before the end of the year. Maybe it will be another christmas day supprise
Posted By: omegatron Re: New 6.4 Beta On Board - 09/19/2003 7:18 AM
Nah given that a public beta is not out yet and we are almost to October I would think we might get another Christmas Present this year from Infopop.
Posted By: ksanuk Re: New 6.4 Beta On Board - 09/19/2003 9:54 AM
Hi,

Just had my first look at 6.4 and I love it!
Some really cool new stuff in there (the ignore user will prevent some aggrivation for my users ).

I did notice though that the results of a poll show up in a popup window with a fixed size. The one JoshPet did did not fit in that window and therefore some of the results were not visible.

Sanuk!

I don't think I will be here at Christmas.
Posted By: omegatron Re: New 6.4 Beta On Board - 09/19/2003 11:43 PM
LOL

Your a Funny Man.

Well given the track record of your companies production times over the past 5 version that is about the time one can guess from the point you are out now. However if alot of bugs are found we could be looking at next spring for 6.4
Posted By: shortbus Re: New 6.4 Beta On Board - 09/20/2003 5:56 AM
I'd estimate it will be done right about the very beginning of November. Actually, probably around the 9th.

Because that's probably about the time my site will all be hacked out with all the good toys and running perfectly well. At that point, 6.4 will come out, and I'll of course have to start my obsession at square one. GOOD NEWS FOR YOU TDEV GUYS

No, Chuck. I mean I might not be here for Christmas. As in vacation. As in, not able to do a version release.

No comment on the rest of it.

Dev5 Uploaded, more bugfixes

Im feeling stupid, I cant find out how to ignore a user in the beta, and the FAQ on the board doesnt say..

heh
Posted By: ericgtr Re: New 6.4 Beta On Board - 10/22/2003 9:31 PM
I think you just click on the users name and it's at the bottom of their profile near the Send PM link.
Posted By: Medar Re: New 6.4 Beta On Board - 10/23/2003 8:54 PM
Guess I will wait a bit before snagging this beta...since the release might be out before next Friday.

Wootah?
Posted By: omegatron Re: New 6.4 Beta On Board - 10/24/2003 8:46 PM
Medar,

You must have a crystal ball that none of the rest of us have.

Beta 2 is not even out yet and there are bug fixes from Beta 1. I would doubt that the final would be anytime next week.
Posted By: JoshPet Re: New 6.4 Beta On Board - 10/24/2003 9:06 PM
Yeah - beta 2 has just gone to private testing. So it's moving along, but probably not that fast.
Posted By: Ian_W Re: New 6.4 Beta On Board - 10/25/2003 1:22 PM
It will be out on Friday (but then as every day is Friday here, that is not much help )
Posted By: msula Re: New 6.4 Beta On Board - 10/25/2003 3:27 PM
I got 5 dollars on another holiday release.. probably halloween, which happens to be a friday
Posted By: omegatron Re: New 6.4 Beta On Board - 10/25/2003 3:41 PM
Well that would be cool however if we are looking at BETA 2 coming next friday look for the final if there are no problems for a HOLIDAY THANKSGIVING RELEASE. If there are problems then they will probally shoot for an XMAS RELEASE.

All in all 6.4 has been so far a very quick beta release to final overall from what I am seeing.

I love Navaho's WHEN IT'S DONE!!!
Posted By: msula Re: New 6.4 Beta On Board - 10/25/2003 3:50 PM
If it isn't out by halloween I will switch my forums to PHPBB!!!!! lol.. j/k

I haven't even gotten the beta installed yet, so even if the final was released today, I still wouldn't have it installed by thanksgiving anyway
Posted By: Ian_W Re: New 6.4 Beta On Board - 10/25/2003 8:10 PM
I can confirm it will be released the day after the day before it is released.
Posted By: slayer60 Re: New 6.4 Beta On Board - 10/25/2003 10:42 PM
Ian, the information that you have is %100 incorrect. It will be released the day before the day after it is released. At least, thats what my highly paid source tells me.

Sooo, when is 6.4 going to be out of beta?
When it's ready.
It was released yesterday.
I'm going to predict it is released sometime before 6.5 is
Has anyone actually checked Infopop's members area lately?

I have and yes it is out
Wow, I must have just missed it. I kept refreshing the members area every 15 minutes or so.. went and ate some pizza, and now it's up
Woot Know what I am doing this weekend
I am already hacking away
Ugg do I really need the full langauge version or not... I mean its 50MB!!!
Considering that most of the languages are up to date? I wouldn't. Although it will be the last version released with these languages. Might be worth saving for the Rick Baker museum someday.
Wow so you are only go start supporting the Dutch Version?
