I am not shure what you have to do on NT server. And I am not shure what you mean by "main pages". If you mean an external indexpage outside ubb, and you are running Apache, you could try to set the "xBitHack On" in the httpd.conf within the xBitHack on
and chmod +x index.html(the calling page...and YES, you DONT have to name it .shtml)
xBitHack on is a nice way to avoid using the .shtml extention. Hope this can be of any help, if not it could serve as a peace of good information for similar issues
