avatarlist.cgi was originally meant so that when you could see what all the available avatars were; it was not meant to be used to select an avatar directly by clicking on that icon directly. A user contributed the Javascript that's used in avatarlist.cgi; unfortuantely, I don't know why it doesn't work for non-IE browsers (probably due to the use of IE specific commands) but if you're using a non-IE browser, chances an error will occur.
P.S. MHX for avatar hack has been remade. Import shouldn't cause any more problems. Re-download the ZIP file to get new MHX.
