Because, all other things being equal (server hardware/software and setup, number of users, number of posts and threads, browser version, etc etc etc), database queries are what determines server load - that's a pretty basic concept in database/software design. Just because you
can query for the most minute details doesn't mean you
should.
The average user doesn't care where the templates are stored, that multiple templates are available, etc. - all they know is the site is slow. All non-forum-software things being equal, threads is faster and less server-intensive due to the design/implementation. I don't have to prove less-queries-means-better-performance, that's common sense - a vb developer needs to prove their design
hasn't compromised performance for what could be seen as unnecessary fluff.
